I love the smell of hipsters in the morning.

It smells like...victory.

Less about the hipsters and more about the...moving...part.

Well of course this is good news. I was making as they say, joke.

Really fucking good location too. Opportunities abound for good foot traffic as well. Cheers to Familia...I look forward to many more moons of service.

Oh...also close to a Chipotle...that is smart thinking.

This is going to be awesome. It'll be that much easier to spread the goodness that is Familia. Congrats Tucker, Juri, Steve, Adam, and all involved.

cal surf land, that's kinda harsh

Anonymous said...

its gonna be good for skateboarding

Anonymous said...

i agree with the cal surf comment.... kind of invading on an already claimed area

Anonymous said...

"claimed area"? like bloods and crips claimed area?

Anonymous said...

whats wrong with the current location? The new hennepin spot is like a mile from cal surf and is completely infested with fresh out of college yuppies. And the traffic sucks!

Anonymous said...

Thanks scott, jake and anonymous for the support. We're hyped to be around, and wanna keep it that way. We're looking forward to our new digs in uptown. Pretty sure there's enough to go around for everyone...

weak game!!

familiagreed!! smells foul

Anonymous said...

how will it be good for skateboarding? Does familia make babies and breed? if they did there current location would work just fine. wouldn't it?

Anonymous said...

looks like familia and zumiez go hand in hand it seems like something zumiez would do. move in next to established shop. BOO!!

Extreme Ash said...

Haters please.

If you're trying to compare zumiez and familia you clearly don't know your shit. As for "claimed" territory...most people who are down are down for both cal and familia. Cal has a history in that part of town that is undisputed - and Familia is in no way trying to maliciously infringe on that. They're trying to stay in the game, it's that simple. The products overlap at the stores to a degree, but a large portion of each store's staple brands are not carried at the other shop. Plus Cal carries winter gear and snowboarding swag - Familia is strictly skate, shoes, and soft-goods. Stop hating. Start appreciating - now ya'll have two rad shops within a couple miles of each other (and chipotle). Customer always wins.

You kids dont get it. Zumiez? (i mean come on, fucking poser) or people that helped make your fucking scene what it is today and trust me the other shops we're doing shit! Truth is truth and soon more people will have the chance to experience a good shop! Since when don't you want to support skateboarding? This is a Skateboard shop.

St. Paul is going to need a new skate shop.

platinumseagulls said...

That Zumiez comment is hands down the stupidest thing ever posted in the comments on this site, and if you follow the comments around here, you know there's been some incredibly stupid shit posted. Way to win the race to the bottom fool.

it's super weak. IF their was enough to go around they wouldn't be moveing. The whole industry or country for that matter is suffering. All this will achieve is putting both shop's in the shitter. Nice call.

Anonymous said...

from what i hear cal already isn't rolling in the dough. And im guessing their biggest seller is Nike SB because they are the only ones in MPLS to sell them. and now that is going to change...

im not trying to get down on familia, i love that shop, but it is an interesting move

Anonymous said...

Why ya ditching St paul????

Anonymous said...

This sounds Familia(r)!! Didn't the English do this to the Indians back in the day???

Anonymous said...

deal wid it.....

Scott said...

Not that most of you know your assholes from your mouths but seriously, why is everyone acting like Familia being in St. Paul and Cal Surf in Uptown is hundreds of miles apart? They're literally a 15 minute drive apart from each other.

I can't speak on behalf of Familia nor am I, but usually when a store moves, its because they have a better opportunity in a new location. Yes the "country is suffering" but what does that really have to do with two skateshops in the twin cities? This whole discourse is moronic.

Anonymous said...

Let's fucking grow up people. Your arguing about two great shops, being to close? Next you'll probably argue about how close Platinum Seagulls has them in the links section.

funny, lot's of opinions on a delicate matter yet, no one has the balls to leave a name. I ride for cal surf and some of my dearest friends are apart of familia.

I for one have personal experience in this matter. At the tender and delicate age of 19 i opened a skate shop downtown, Scott and i had differences (this is pre-internet and mall store) even then MPLS not just uptown did not have room for two stores> point being if it aint working in shellbyville it aint gonna work here.

This is nothing more than a declaration of war on cal surf.I remember when the skate seen was divided by things of this nature. Nothing good can come of this for the skate seen. Do not kid yourself kids, SKATEBOARDING IS SKATEBOARDING AND BUSINESS IS BUSINESS. So do not try to say this is for the benefit of skateboarding.

Cal surf has been there for 20 years love them or hate them and Scott has had my back for over 10. So i beg of you good sirs do not kill both shops.

yes! familia! bout' time we got some cut throat buisness men in this skateboardn' community!! are you guys going to be opening any gas stations or franchising any fast food joints, that would make for a killer portfolio?

Anonymous said...

It is about time we got a shop focused on skateboarding in uptown. What is with snowboard shops calling themselves skateshops?

THE HESH said...

Whoa.
Everyone should relax.
You guys don't fully understand the scenario. hating on a shop like familia because they choose to move to a location to keep their doors open is retarded. Don't you know a single thing about business? Competition is always better for the customer. The two shops cater to different needs and if anything this will only make uptown the raddest place to skate. There's no denying it, their spot in st. paul wasn't exactly the best place for a skate shop. Uptown brings in customers, you don't just happen upon familia in st paul. You have to already know about it to get there. All the dudes that work at familia have the choice to move their shop wherever they want to and to disrespect their decision is just being ignorant. Grow up. Cal Surf is rad and Familia is rad and I'm hyped they will BOTH be real close to where I live.

Why does "Todd Brown" think he's still matter's? No one care's what you think. Your beyond washed up "bra".

Anonymous said...

Know anything about business? Are you simple? They carrie the same product's. And as far as the place to skate? you must not. Their has never been jack shit to skate in uptown.

THE HESH said...

Me simple? Learn how to spell "carry" before you call somebody simple. "Carrie" is a name. And let's not argue about where the best place to skate is. You're a ballsniffer.

Uptown is undoubtedly a much better spot for Familia. As far as the skate scene being divided, I purchase skateboarding related items from both shops and I will continue to do so regardless of where Familia is located. It is true however that they may infringe a bit on Cal's hipster walkby Nike/sunglasses market(I'm not sure how valuable that is)and perhaps maybe the jock upside down visor longboard market(also questionable but is money nonetheless)that much is true. I think we can all agree that their bread and butter snowboard market will remain untouched by Familia's presence. In regards to them carrying the same products, it may appear that way to the untrained eye but if you look a little closer you can clearly see that Familia will not be stealing Cal's I am Familia T-shirt market just as Familia will not be selling any Cal specific merch. My point is that they both carry incredibly different, unique, and exclusive items. If anything the competition created between the two shops will create a demand for more of these types of items as the shops continue to diversify themselves. These goods in my opinion were always more creative and I can personally identify with because its a local concept. So on that note (as the Hesh stated)THE CUSTOMER BENEFITS from the unique products that truly set them apart from everyone else in the world, the shops benefit from better profit margins, and local artists are being supported. It really doesn't sound like that bad of deal.Or they can price battle to see who can offer kingpins at the lowest price.(Not likely) Either way the CUSTOMER BENEFITS. Are you guys suggesting that there is a large group of people shopping at Cal merely because of its location and not because they have any feeling of patronage or even like the place. I can say that I don't feel that way. If that is the case then this will be the opportunity for Cal to pro actively address that. These shops have shared business up to this point. They can certainly continue to do so. Good luck guys.........

Oh and that Zumiez comparison absolutely ridiculous.....Dude you obviously have no idea.......

Well said.
